What is Our Reliance Costing Us?

Yesterday, the Supreme Court had a major ruling on how the Government can or cannot tax you regarding having health insurance.  If you havent' heard anything about it, just got to any news website and check it out.  This blog isn't about that specific case but about how we as Christians have fallen into a trap that started a long time ago.

In I Samuel 8, the people of Israel petition Samuel to give them a king.  Samuel was getting old and his heirs weren't acting the way they should have been, so the people thought it was time for a change.  They looked at other countries and saw how nice it was to be provided for by a king and they wanted that.  They forgot the fact that it was a king who had enslaved them back in Pharaoh's day and that God was the one who freed them and provided for them.

Samuel took their request to God and being God, He gave them what they wanted.  God asked Samuel to give them this warning... "This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots.12 And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.13 And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.14 And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.15 And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.s16 And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.17 He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants.18 And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the Lord will not hear you in that day."

As I read that warning, so many things crossed my mind, including our political landscape today.  I know that politics, kings, government and all that is included has been around for a long time.  I understand we believe there is a necessity to having a functioning government in place but we have we lost by giving in to "the man"...

Our country was founded on freedoms and the rights of men to rule themselves.  I would venture to guess that no where did our founding fathers envisioned that our government would be what it is today.  Most people would say that our system of government isn't perfect but it is better than what else is out there.  Sadly, most people have bought the lie of government, same as the people of Israel.  Just like them, our government has slowly stripped away the majority of our freedoms and we have allowed them and even given them the ability.

So, what are we to do them?  I doubt anyone reading this blog can afford their own country or even the ability to move to another one and even then you would be just trading one governmental system for another.  How can we fix what is broken?  We need to go back.  We need to go back to the desert.  We need to recognize that our governners, our president, congress, the senate or any government entity can save us.  We need to remember the responsibility we have to place our trust in Him and allow Him to provide for us.  We need to focus on others more than ourselves.  We have lost the ability to care for others unless there is a major disaster.  We need to pray that God will forgive us and that He will once again be king in our life.

Just think, what if we started taking care of the elderly, widowed and children just as the Bible said.  Where is the church in helping provide care to those who need it?  The church would rather spend millions on building state of the art building while millions of children go hungry each night.

We need change and no person can provide it...  We must go back to the desert.
