How to See Stars During the Day

Enjoy one of our Youth Services. This was taken on August 30th. The lesson looked at Habakkuk and focused on our ability & need to question God. Sometimes our lives come with questions and God is big enough to hear and answer them.
Please leave me a comment about what you think of the lesson, good, bad or indifferent.

FYI, there is a black space during part of the video, the audio still works and the problem is short, so just let it play...

Watched your service, ya' stinkin' techie! Dude, I wish I could do those things. Oh well...

Good job, my friend. If you are looking for comments, here ya' go...

1. Get rid of your tables! I kept seeing to the left of the you that you had students with their backs turned to you while you were speaking. If you have them for the students to take notes on your lessons, buy some small clipboards. Eliminate all the distractions you can.

2. Buy "backwards hat boy" some ridlin (hehe). Dude was bouncin' off the walls. I'm still trying to figure out what the tissue in the hat was about... Seriously, there will always be students like this, but after watching your opening and "call to worship", things were still very loose and order was not attained before everything began. Reinforce that "this is God's time", not their's. Don't start until everyone is focused on what is about to begin. Sometimes it is hard, but the more you push it, the easier it gets.

3. Great job getting students to lead your music. That is huge. Kudos to them for me...

4. To your lesson. I understood your main point, but I was wondering when you were going to get to it. You gave more illustrations than you gave from the "meat" of scripture. It is one thing to use an illustration to enhance understanding of your main point, but it can be overdone.

Again, I understood what you were trying to sy, but in a roundabout way. You are right, it is ok for us to ask questions...to cry out to God. I think He can handle it. You are right on track in teaching this. But then it seemed you shifted gears and changed the subject. Maybe I missed something. Who knows. I had to watch this in shifts...

As for your choice of songs in the end, "What If God Was One of Us?"?? Not sure where you were going with this one. Got lost there. I've never been real thrilled with this song, but that is for another day. Read the book, "God Is Not". It'll help explain.

5. Finally, in your closing the video got kind of cut off so I didn't get to see your ending. But what I saw seemed that you just kind of left things hanging. I'd like to know how you closed the service.

Dude, I hope this didn't come off as though you did a horrible job. You didn't. These are just things to think about. Before a friend moved back to Nashville recently, I asked Him to critique me on a regular basis, hoping to grow in what I am doing.

Keep it up, my friend. I'll talk to you later. Much grace and peace!

Toastmaster Stats

You spoke for 21 minutes.
- 48 "Ums"
- 9 minutes before you mentioned GOD
- 13 minutes before you started your lesson
- 8 minutes on your topic (kind of)

Also noted teens with their backs to you. Maybe consider different seating configuration.

Overall I liked the subject matter; Maybe at the end ask for interaction on the topic.

You are brave to let us watch and comment - Janice

Roy, you did a great job. These are just some of the things I personally saw or felt about it.

1. First off the boy with the balloons is distracting during a good part of the video.

2.To me the format was a little too informal and unorganized. I would have the kids calm down more and be somewhat more reverent before starting. If this is a weekly meeting then the kids should know the structure of the class and know when to calm it down and get ready to participate or know when to be quiet. It’s great to be happy and interact with each other, but they seem somewhat rambunctious at times.

3.I would have the kids all face you since it seems some of them have their backs to you.
4.To me it seems like you give too many examples or stories before getting into what the sermon is about.
5. The TV was somewhat distracting even though it was almost out of frame?

6. Not a fan of the Joan Osborne song since it’s not really a Christian song. Even though this is a trivial thing, I would suggest a Christian song, ie. Jeremy Camp’s I still Believe or Never Alone by Barlow Girls or another song that deals with questions we have or doubts about God that He’s still there and doensn’t mind us questioning Him.

7. Would like to have seen how you wrapped up the lesson after the song, the video cut off early.

Now for the good:

1. The examples/stories that you gave were something that the kids could relate to and led into what the lesson was about.
2. Even though the kids were somewhat rowdy at times you kept them interested in the sermon and kept focused and had them interact
3. The lesson was very interesting and I liked the subject matter since kids at that age question all authority including God’s authority.

4. Bravo on having the kids involved in the worship service. Anytime you can get kids to lead out in church at all is an awesome thing! The one boy who led song service did a really wonderful job and keeping it flowing and segwaying into the next songs.

5. I am looking forward to see your next lesson on how God responds.
5. Your kids seem to really treat you as a friend instead of just their Pastor which is awesome!

Don't mean to have so many things on here, but you did want feedback. Keep up the great work and God Bless!!!
